Adaptive and playful reuse. Transforming a nearly vacant 12-story building, we used unique colors, textures and materials to create an Art Deco-inspired 178-unit apartment complex, bringing variety to the streetscape and rich new amenities to tenants.
Project Details
The project is an adaptive reuse of a nearly vacant and underutilized building. 178-unit apartment building will also offer amenities to its tenants, such as expansive rooftop terraces, and community rooms. The design approach is to use unique colors, textures and materials to articulate an 12 story building with a large footprint. These rich colors have a contrast to the beige/light tan palette prevalent on the surrounding buildings. We intend for the entry portal and bay to serve as the building’s iconic image. The entry tower element and ribbon windows have a unique aesthetic that is a playful reinterpretation of the Art Deco design that Silver Spring was notable for. The horizontal motif of solid/void is also unusual from the majority of the buildings in the neighborhood.
